Daring Discipleship
February 23, 2003
In his message, Pastor Ray Calupig, our guest speaker,
talked about three Biblical examples of training as a disciple of Christ.
Quoting 2 Timothy 2:1-7, he said that as disciples, Christians have to
be dedicated as a soldier, disciplined as an athlete and diligent as a farmer.
1. Be dedicated as a soldier.
3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving
as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs - he wants to please his commanding
officer.
a. sacrificing our time
b. prioritizing our activity
2. Be disciplined as an athlete.
5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's
crown unless he competes according to the rules.
a. philosophy of Christian life
b. practice of Christian virtues
Be diligent as a farmer.
6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of
the crops.
a. systematic cultivation
Pastor Calupig said that the goal of the church and its leaders is
to see people come to Jesus Christ, be discipled and grow in spiritual maturity.

Remember Christ Jesus, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is
my Gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like
a criminal. But God's Word is not chained. Therefore, I endure everything for
the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ
Jesus, with eternal glory.
