Jesus, The Great High Priest

April 21, 2002

Pastor Nicky Joya talked about the permanent and perfect priesthood of Jesus Christ, who is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always intercedes with God the Father.

According to Pastor Nicky, the priesthood of Jesus Christ is permanent therefore, the provisions of the New Covenant are permanent and better than the Old.

A. The promise of permanence

"And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, but He became a priest with an oath when God said to Him, 'The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind: "You are a priest forever"'.  Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant." (Hebrews 7:20-22)

B.  A person of perfection

   1. Jesus is the Eternal High Priest who is able to save completely.

"Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office, but because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them." (Hebrews 7:23-25)

   2. Jesus is the Holy High Priest who is able to offer a perfect sacrifice.

"Such a High Priest meets our need - one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people.  He sacrificed for their sins once for all when He offered Himself.  For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever." (Hebrews 7:26-28)

"And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.  Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.  But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God."

(Hebrews 10:10-12)
