Lesson 5: What Proves My Relationship with God?

"We are saved through faith alone, but saving faith is never alone."
                                                                                                        - John Calvin

The statement is a tricky one, isn't it? Lets look at it more closely. Salvation is solely an act of God and we receive it simply by placing our faith in the Person and accomplishments of Jesus Christ, never by human works.

However, faith, for it to be called saving and genuine, should prove itself. We cannot call faith genuine unless it produces evidence.

The Bible exhorts us to test our faith (2 Cor 13:5, 6).

Love For God and Others

1. Love For God

Through our new birth, God has implanted a new inclination in our hearts to love God and a passion to give Him glory.

2. Love For Others

The Bible says that "the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us" (Romans 5:5), giving us the desire and capacity to extend love to others. This new tendency should be manifested in the way we deal with other people.

A Hunger for Righteousness

Since God's righteousness has been imputed on us (2 Corinthians 5:21), the general pattern of our lives should be righteous living.

Communion with God

A saved person longs to commune with his Lord. Upon receiving Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit in us urges us to pray to God (Galatians 4:6). Therefore, evident in the life of a believer is the desire to fellowship with God.

Describe David's longing for God in the following psalms:

Changed Life
(2 Corinthians 5:17)

Changes are bound to take place in the life of a saved person. These changes may be gradual, but should be evident. If not, then, the faith professed may not be genuine.
