Lesson 11: How Can I Live Victoriously?
                 (Dealing with the Flesh)

"But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
                                                                               I Corinthians 15:57

Upon uniting ourselves with Jesus Christ, we have also received tremendous spiritual resources to live transformed Christian lives. It is the Lord's desire that we make use of these blessings to live lives that are pleasing to Him.

We must anticipate, on the other hand, opposition - enemies that seek to prevent us from living victoriously. The Bible identifies for us these enemies: the flesh, the world and Satan.

In this lesson, we would learn how to deal with the flesh.

The Abiding Presence of Sin in Our Flesh

The flesh may be referred to as our humanness. It pertains to all that is human - our tendencies and desires.

The Apostle Paul reveals in Romans 7 that even as Christians, sin still resides in our flesh. Although greatly weakened, the residing sin tries to dominate us.

v. 17 - sin living in me
v. 18 - nothing good dwells in...my flesh (NASB)
v. 20 - sin living in me
v. 23 - sin at work within my members (of my body)
v. 24 - body of death (my flesh) a slave to the law of sin

In the same passage we see that the new nature in us produces a new yearning for what is good and righteous (vv. 22, 23), but is opposed by indwelling sin. When this happens, an internal struggle occurs.

Describe Paul's honest confession in Romans 7:15-25.

This internal struggle is a life-long battle which will only end when Jesus Christ comes to clothe us with a new body.

According to 1 Corinthians 15:51-57, what is going to happen to our earthly bodies when the Lord comes?

3. Train your body for holiness (1 Cor. 9:25-27; Phil. 3:12-14; Heb. 5:14). Personal holiness is a joint venture between God and the believer. God will surely do His part, but we are expected to do our part as well.
